Natalie Aurelio,
San Francisco, Califonia In 1993, three-and-a-half-year-old Natalie Aurelio had a seizure. Natalie’s parents, Liz and Dave Aurelio, immediately sought medical attention for their daughter, but a brain scan turned up nothing unusual. The seizures continued, progressing in their intensity and, in the months following, Natalie lost her ability to walk and talk along with many of the motor skills she had developed as a toddler. A second brain scan nine months later showed major changes that pointed to brain degeneration. Given little hope for their daughter, the Aurelios were simply instructed to make her as comfortable as possible. Instead, the Aurelios made her a promise... to discover what was causing the seizures and find a treatment. Today, Natalie lives with her parents and brother in California. She receives lots of love and compassionate care from her family and dedicated caregivers. Her condition remains stable. Natalie has suffered mental impairment, seizures, loss of motor skills, and blindness. Throughout everything, she remains a beautiful child with a smile that lights up the room.
